How migration fuels urban growth and shifts national demographics

In short: From the industrial boom of the 19th-century United States to modern-day demographic shifts in the UK, migration has been a primary engine of population growth. As cities expand and natural birth rates decline, the movement of people remains a critical factor in shaping the future of entire nations.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States experienced a massive influx of immigrants. Millions of Europeans arrived, driving rapid urbanization and providing the essential labor required for the country's industrialization. In the western United States, Chinese immigrants played a vital role, working in mines and on the railroads. However, this era was also marked by significant social tension; while some immigrants secured rights through Supreme Court decisions, others faced racial profiling and discriminatory laws, such as anti-Chinese legislation passed despite a veto from President Grover Cleveland.

In the modern United Kingdom, migration has become the dominant driver of population change. For most of the last two decades, net migration has exceeded natural change—the difference between births and deaths. While natural change has declined since 2011 and turned negative in 2023, migration has accounted for 99% of UK population growth since 2020. Partly due to a higher proportion of women in childbearing years, this trend exists among non-UK-born women.

Demographic projections suggest that the UK population could reach approximately 72.4 million by mid-2049. This growth is expected to be slower than in previous decades; the projected growth rate of 4.5% between mid-2024 and mid-2049 is significantly lower than the 18% growth seen between mid-1999 and mid-2024. As fertility rates fluctuate, the movement of people continues to be the primary mechanism for sustaining and expanding national populations.
