In short: How does a man become a fugitive for a crime committed before he could speak? Hannibal Gaddafi spent ten years in Lebanese detention for the 1978 disappearance of an Imam, despite being only three years old at the time of the event.

Hannibal Gaddafi, the fifth son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, became the subject of a protracted legal and diplomatic saga following the 1978 disappearance of Shiite Imam Musa al-Sadr. Although the Imam vanished in 1978, Hannibal was only three years old. He consistently maintained his innocence, asserting that his father was not even in the city where the Imam was last hosted, and identifying other individuals as the only ones with relevant knowledge. His life since 2011 has been marked by extreme volatility. After fleeing Libya with his family, he was eventually kidnapped and held in Lebanon by an armed group in 2015. This led to an arrest warrant and a decade of detention. During this period, his life was overshadowed by allegations of domestic violence; a nanny claimed his wife, Aline Skaf, subjected her to severe abuse, and a Danish court upheld reports of Gaddafi's involvement in an abduction in 2005. The geopolitical stakes of his release were immense. Negotiations involved high-level lobbying from Turkey and various intermediaries, including a rumored plot involving associates of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Despite these efforts, the Shia-dominated Amal Movement and Hezbollah blocked many release attempts. It was not until October 2025 that a Lebanese court ordered his release on bail, which was eventually reduced to $900,000, leading to his relocation to South Africa.
