To the ancient Egyptians, a million was not just a number
In short: In modern mathematics, a million is a large but finite quantity. For the ancient Egyptians, it represented something far more profound: infinity. By personifying this concept as a deity, they bridged the gap between measurable reality and the eternal chaos that preceded the birth of the world.
Heh was a central figure in the Ogdoad, a group of primordial deities in ancient Egyptian religion who represented the elements existing before creation. Specifically, Heh served as the personification of infinity or eternity. His name originally translated to "flood," a direct reference to Nu—the watery chaos that Egyptians believed existed before the world was formed. Because they viewed this primordial state as infinite, while the created world was finite, Heh became the divine embodiment of those boundless waters.
The visual language used to depict Heh reveals how the Egyptians conceptualized time and scale. He was frequently portrayed in a male form as a frog or a frog-headed human; the frog served as a potent symbol for fertility, regeneration, and creation. His female counterpart, Hauhet, was often depicted as a snake or snake-headed human. These animal forms linked the abstract concept of eternity to the tangible cycles of life and rebirth found in nature.
Perhaps most striking is how Heh influenced Egyptian numeracy and art. He is often shown crouching while holding palm stems, which symbolized long life. The years were represented by notches on these stems, and the inclusion of a "shen ring" at the base signified infinity. Because of this association with the unending, depictions of Heh were used in hieroglyphs to represent one million—a number that functioned as a linguistic and mathematical equivalent to infinity. This dual identity earned him the title of the "god of millions of years."
