How a Scottish judge mapped the evolution of human society through four distinct stages
In short: Henry Home, Lord Kames, was a central figure of the Scottish Enlightenment who shaped modern history by theorizing that civilization progresses through four predictable stages. From hunter-gatherers to commercial societies, his framework defined anthropology and sociology for two hundred years, influencing how we understand the development of human culture today.
Born in 1696, Henry Home rose to prominence as a Scottish judge and philosopher, eventually earning the title Lord Kames in 1752. Beyond his legal career, he acted as a vital patron to intellectual giants like Adam Smith and David Hume. His influence extended into the very structure of academic disciplines, with scholars arguing he played a significant role in establishing English as an academic subject in Scottish universities.
In his work Historical Law Tracts, Kames proposed a four-stage model of social evolution. He argued that human history moved from hunting and gathering to herding, then to agriculture, and finally to commercial society. He believed this progression was driven by economic necessity; as individuals moved from subsistence to specialized roles like blacksmithing or masonry, the increasing complexity of their relationships required formal laws and enforcement. Kames observed these stages simultaneously within 18th-century Scotland, contrasting the pastoral Highlands with the commercial hubs of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Kames was a complex and controversial figure. While he was a progressive legal mind who sat on the panel that ruled slavery illegal in Scotland, he was also a polygenist who argued in his 1774 book, Sketches of the History of Man, that different human races originated from separate, distinct stocks. His work on literary criticism, Elements of Criticism, further sought to ground aesthetic rules in the human heart rather than arbitrary tradition. By linking property, law, and social development, Kames provided a blueprint for the study of civilization that dominated historical thought for two centuries.
