Can a monster-to-human ray fix family drama in the final Hotel Transylvania film?
In short: In the fourth installment of the animated franchise, a malfunctioning invention turns Dracula into a human and his son-in-law into a dragon. As they race to reverse the transformation, the duo must confront deep-seated tensions about family, legacy, and the future of their iconic monster hotel.
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, released in 2022, serves as a pivotal chapter in the long-running animated series. The plot centers on a device created by Professor Abraham Van Helsing, the Monsterfication Ray, which inadvertently swaps the species of the main characters. Dracula, fearing that his son-in-law Johnny will ruin his hotel, fabricates a legal rule to prevent him from inheriting it. This deception triggers a chaotic journey to South America, where the protagonists must locate a crystal to restore their original forms before the mutation becomes permanent.
The production faced significant shifts during its development. Originally intended for a theatrical debut in October 2021, the film was sold to Amazon Studios for $100 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered on Prime Video in January 2022. The film also saw a major casting change; Brian Hull replaced Adam Sandler as the voice of Dracula, while directors Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon took the helm for their directorial debuts. Genndy Tartakovsky, who directed the previous entries, remained involved as a screenwriter and executive producer.
Critical reception was mixed, with the film holding a 47% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics noted that while the animation remained energetic and reminiscent of classic cartoons, the narrative struggled to balance its moral themes with its comedic tone. Despite being marketed as the franchise finale, the series continues to evolve. A television series titled Motel Transylvania is slated for 2025, and a fifth feature film, The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania, is currently scheduled for an October 2027 release.
