Clownfish live in strictly regimented schools where only the dominant male gets to breed.

How Clownfish Breed Despite That They Are All Born Male · 3:34 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: Clownfish are sequential hermaphrodites that begin life as males. This video explains the rigid social hierarchy of their schools, where the largest female leads and only the most aggressive male earns the right to reproduce.

Clownfish, or anemonefish, exist in groups consisting entirely of males and a single dominant female. This female is typically the largest member of the school. The social structure is maintained by the second-in-command, the largest and most aggressive male, who suppresses the growth of other males by monopolizing the best food sources.

Because of his dominance, this lead male is the only one permitted to breed with the female. This system ensures that resources and reproductive rights are concentrated at the top of the hierarchy.
