The tragic reality behind the legend of Harry Houdini's final performance

How Did Harry Houdini Actually Die? · 7:05 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: While popular lore suggests a single punch ended the life of the world's greatest escape artist, the truth is a more complex medical tragedy. This video explores the final days of Houdini, revealing how a combination of exhaustion and a hidden illness proved more dangerous than any stunt.

In October 1926, at age 52, Harry Houdini was touring despite a broken ankle and his wife's illness. On October 22, a student named J. Gordon Whitehead punched Houdini in the stomach to test his physical limits. While the punch occurred, it was not the immediate cause of death.

Houdini was already suffering from a 102-degree fever and abdominal pain. A Detroit doctor diagnosed him with acute appendicitis, but Houdini refused hospitalization to perform a sold-out show. By the time he was operated on October 25, his appendix had burst, causing peritonitis. This exploration highlights the tension between Houdini's legendary perseverance and the physical toll of his profession.
