Why pure gold is too soft for your jewelry
In short: While we associate gold with luxury, its purest form is surprisingly delicate. This video explores why jewelers must transform the element into an alloy to ensure it survives daily wear.
Pure gold, known as 24 karat gold, is naturally golden in color. However, it is exceptionally soft; it can be dented simply by pressing a fingernail firmly against it. Because of this vulnerability, 24 karat gold is unsuitable for items like rings or bracelets, which would quickly deform under normal use. To increase durability, gold is mixed with other metals to create a gold alloy.
