Can illumination turn a secular building into a sacred experience?

How do you build a sacred space? | Siamak Hariri · 12:47 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: Architect Siamak Hariri explores the design of the Bahá'í Temple of South America. He reveals how light and form can create a sense of the sacred in our modern world.

In this talk, Hariri details the creative process behind the Bahá'í Temple of South America in Santiago, Chile. To reimagine what a sacred space looks like, he focused on the concept of illumination. This involved designing a form that captures the sun's movement throughout the day and selecting iridescent, luminous stone and glass to construct the temple.

Completed in 2016 after a project beginning in 2003, this temple is the final of the Bahá'í continental temples. Hariri's work aims to bridge the gap between physical architecture and spiritual experience, exploring how specific materials and light can evoke a sense of holiness in a secular context.
