Your body actually prioritizes carbon dioxide levels over oxygen when regulating your breathing
In short: While we breathe to obtain oxygen, the body is surprisingly more sensitive to carbon dioxide levels. Maintaining the correct oxygen balance is vital, as both deficiencies and excesses can be harmful. Understanding how the body detects these shifts reveals the complex mechanisms behind hypoxemia and the risks of low blood oxygen.
Hypoxemia, defined as low oxygen levels in the blood, occurs when the body fails to deliver sufficient oxygen to tissues and organs. This state, known as hypoxia, can lead to severe damage to the brain or heart if prolonged, such as in cases of nocturnal hypoxemia caused by sleep apnea. In sudden and severe instances, the condition can be fatal.
The body relies on a delicate balance of ventilation and perfusion to maintain oxygen levels. Ventilation involves airflow into the lungs, while perfusion refers to the blood flow necessary to collect that oxygen. When these processes are mismatched, or when oxygen cannot properly diffuse from the lungs into the bloodstream due to conditions like emphysema or pulmonary fibrosis, hypoxemia develops. Other causes include hypoventilation, where breathing is too shallow or slow, and right-to-left shunting, where deoxygenated blood bypasses the lungs entirely.
External factors also play a significant role. At high altitudes, the reduced availability of oxygen in the environment makes it difficult for the blood to receive the necessary supply, leading to symptoms ranging from minor breathlessness to severe altitude sickness. Furthermore, various underlying health issues, including asthma, COPD, congestive heart failure, and infections like pneumonia or COVID-19, increase the risk of developing hypoxemia. Symptoms are diverse and include confusion, bluish skin, rapid heart rate, and shortness of breath, requiring professional medical diagnosis to identify the specific underlying cause.
