Can companies deliver superior profits by prioritizing purpose over short-term gains?

How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit - Alex Edmans · 56:57 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: Many believe that doing good requires sacrificing profit. However, emerging evidence suggests the opposite: treating stakeholders well may actually drive higher long-term returns. By moving away from a zero-sum mindset, businesses can grow the total value available to everyone, rather than just fighting over a fixed slice.

The tension between corporate purpose and profitability often stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of time horizons. In many organizations, finance departments view social responsibility as a distraction from the primary goal of generating profit. While this focus might yield results in the short term, it often fails to account for the long-term value created by strong stakeholder relationships. This misalignment often results from a narrow focus on immediate financial metrics. Consequently, many leaders fail to recognise that long-term success depends on social integration.

Professor Alex Edmans, a finance expert at London Business School, argues that the idea of business and society being in conflict is a false dichotomy. His research suggests that companies focusing on their stakeholders—such as employees, customers, and the environment—actually outperform their peers. To illustrate, Edmans' research demonstrated that firms boasting high levels of staff contentment beat comparable businesses by 2.3% to 3.8% each year throughout 28 years. This represents a compounded outperformance of 89% to 184%.

Crucially, the evidence suggests a causal direction: it is employee satisfaction that drives superior performance, rather than high performance simply allowing for higher satisfaction. This 'pie-growing' mentality suggests that environmental stewardship, sustainability, and customer satisfaction are not just moral imperatives but sound business strategies. For companies that fail to adapt, the risks are real: they face potential anti-business regulations and a loss of talent and customers to competitors who share their values. This shift is essential to prevent the rise of populist movements and social unrest. Ultimately, embedding purpose into a company's core operations is a vital strategy for modern survival.
