How Magellan circumnavigated the globe - Ewandro Magalhaes · 5:53 · Video: TED-Ed · Watch at the source

In short: In September 1522, a single ship returned to Spain with only 18 sailors left. This video explores the unprecedented journey of Ferdinand Magellan's fleet and the vessel that changed history.

The voyage concluded on September 6, 1522, when the Victoria arrived in southern Spain. Of the original fleet, only this one vessel and its 18 remaining crew members survived the three-year expedition.

Despite the heavy losses, the journey is recorded as a success for completing the first recorded circumnavigation of the Earth.
