Can a single tree grow 40 different types of fruit?
In short: Artist Sam Van Aken has engineered a living sculpture that produces 40 different varieties of fruit on one tree. This video explores the grafting techniques and artistic vision behind this botanical marvel.
Sam Van Aken, a sculptor and art professor, created the 'Tree of 40 Fruit' starting in 2008. By grafting branches from various trees—including peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, and cherries—he tricks the host tree into sharing a vascular system with the new additions. The process requires precision: inserting a slice of a fruit tree into a matching incision on a host tree that has been growing for at least three years.
The project serves as a living archive of heirloom specimens and a symbol for biodiversity and food security. It takes approximately nine years for a tree to reach its peak: five years for the grafts to develop and four years for the fruit to appear. Currently, 18 of these trees exist across the United States, with some sold to private homes and museums for up to $30,000.
