Beyond biology: how sex chromosomes shape the human brain

How the Brain Shows its Feminine Side - AMNH SciCafe · 29:28 · Video: American Museum of Natural History · Watch at the source

In short: What determines the biological differences between male and female brains? This AMNH SciCafe presentation explores the mechanisms behind sex-based differences in brain anatomy and their potential links to behavior and health.

Researcher Bridget Nugent examines how sex differences are created in the brain. While sex hormones have long been thought to drive anatomical differences, recent research suggests that the expression of genes on sex chromosomes also plays a vital role.

An analysis of over 2,000 brain scans revealed that males and females possess greater volume in different cortical regions. For instance, females showed greater volume in the prefrontal and insula, while males showed greater volume in the ventral temporal and occipital regions. These anatomical variations may contribute to differences in cognitive tasks, such as face processing, and varying risks for conditions like depression or autism spectrum disorder.
