Could flexible solar panels in orbit power everything on Earth?
In short: Modern life relies on wireless technology, but what if the energy itself was wireless? Scientists are testing a vision where flexible solar panels in space collect sunlight and beam the electricity down to Earth, potentially transforming how we power our world without the need for traditional cables.
The concept involves launching lightweight, flexible solar arrays into orbit to harvest solar energy. Unlike traditional power plants, these space-based systems would convert sunlight into electrical power and then beam that energy down to a specific location on Earth. This approach aims to solve the limitations of terrestrial solar by providing a constant source of energy from space.
A critical component of this vision is the Microwave Array for Power-transfer Low-orbit Experiment, known as MAPLE. Developed by a Caltech team led by Professor Ali Hajimiri, MAPLE is part of the Space Solar Power Project (SSPP). This project uses the Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1), a prototype launched into orbit in January, to test if wireless power transfer can work in the harsh environment of space.
To make space-based power feasible, the technology must be lightweight to reduce launch fuel costs and flexible enough to fold into a rocket package. MAPLE utilizes an array of lightweight microwave power transmitters driven by low-cost silicon chips. By using constructive and destructive interference, the array can shift the focus and direction of the energy beam without any moving parts. This allows the system to dynamically focus power on a desired location using the coherent addition of electromagnetic waves, ensuring the majority of the energy reaches its target and nowhere else.
Recent tests have proven the concept's viability. MAPLE proved it could wirelessly send energy through space, hitting Earth with measurable power on March 3. While in orbit, the device activated single LEDs to show the complete process of remote wireless energy transfer.
