Can we achieve space-age speeds on the ground?
In short: Dr. Anita Sengupta explains how rocket science is being repurposed to create the Hyperloop. Watch to see how engineers are designing a vacuum-tube transport system that aims to move passengers at nearly 1,000 km/h.
The Hyperloop represents the first major leap in transit technology in a century. By combining magnetic levitation with electromagnetic propulsion inside a vacuum tube, the system functions like a spacecraft traveling along the earth's surface. It aims to offer high-speed travel with a minimal carbon footprint by running entirely on grid power.
The project benefits from the expertise of Dr. Sengupta, who spent over 20 years developing technologies for Mars exploration and deep space missions. Her work includes developing ion engines for the Dawn spacecraft and the supersonic parachute systems used to land the Curiosity Rover in 2012.
