The world's most extensive early civilization may have been a climate casualty

In short: While Egypt and Mesopotamia often dominate our historical imagination, the Indus Valley Civilization was actually the most extensive of the three earliest civilizations. It flourished through sophisticated irrigation and urban planning, only to face a mysterious and gradual decline that still puzzles archaeologists today.

The Indus Valley Civilization, also known as the Harappan Civilization, was a Bronze Age society that reached its peak between 2600 and 1900 BCE. It was characterized by remarkable urban planning, including complex infrastructure with sewage systems and a unified system of weights and measures. At its height, the civilization covered an estimated 3 million km², an area larger than the combined territories of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The civilization's success was rooted in its mastery of the Indus River. By adopting a model of irrigated agriculture, the Harappan people learned to reap the benefits of the river's fertile silt while constructing dams, wells, and channels to control its formidable annual floods.

This allowed for a well-nourished population that expanded into a vast network of over 150 settlements, including the major cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro. The decline of this urban powerhouse began around 1900 BCE. While early archaeologists like Mortimer Wheeler suggested a sudden collapse, modern evidence points to a more gradual transition. Around 2500 BCE, a decrease in the intensity of summer monsoons likely triggered droughts, forcing populations to migrate eastward toward the Himalayan foothills. Recent studies using stalagmite isotopes and Arabian Sea sediment cores suggest these climate shifts—potentially driven by Arctic air moving toward the Atlantic—played a significant role in the civilization's ultimate demise.
