Can a senior love triangle redefine our understanding of intimacy, identity, and human belonging?

In short: Photographer Isadora Kosofsky spent four years documenting an unconventional romance between three seniors in Los Angeles. By embedding herself in the lives of Will, Jeanie, and Adina, she captured how this trio navigated love, jealousy, and companionship, offering a profound look at the universal human search for connection.

When they met, the trio was aged 84, 81, and 90, respectively. The group dynamic emerged after Will, a World War II veteran and former print shop owner, moved to the same facility as Jeanie, a former theater actress. Will was already in a relationship with Adina, a Swiss-born linguist and Holocaust survivor, but he began seeing Jeanie simultaneously. Rather than choosing one, the three formed a complex, unspoken arrangement.

Kosofsky, who began her career as a documentary photographer at 17, embedded herself within their lives to document their daily routines—from eating in diners to walking hand-in-hand. Her work, compiled in the book Senior Love Triangle, reveals the friction and intimacy of their bond. While Jeanie initially struggled with the arrangement, viewing a relationship as strictly a private affair between two people, she and Adina eventually developed a deep, personal kinship. This bond was forged through their shared experience of being attached to Will, who famously described their unconventional lifestyle as living above the law.

The project serves as a meditation on the human need for community, particularly in later life. Kosofsky notes that their alliance acted as a shield against the loneliness that can often accompany aging. Adina, who spoke five languages, rarely defined their arrangement, simply observing that there are many different kinds of love. Beyond the photography, the story has been adapted into a feature film, which has received recognition at film festivals, further exploring how these three individuals found purpose and belonging in each other during their final years.

Kosofsky’s own journey into this world was rooted in her search for connection following a difficult adolescence. After meeting a resident named Bianca, she began photographing the retirement home community, eventually leading her to the trio. Her work challenges traditional societal expectations of romance and aging, suggesting that the drive for intimacy and the need for a sense of purpose remain constant, regardless of one's stage in life.
