In short: While many associate economics with trading floors and bank balances, the discipline is fundamentally about something more personal: how people navigate the world of choices. Beyond the numbers lies a complex study of human behavior, institutional power, and the invisible forces that shape our global society.

At its core, economics is the study of people and their choices. It examines how individuals, institutions, and governments make decisions and how those decisions influence the broader world. This field is generally divided into two primary pillars: microeconomics and macroeconomics. It is a field that encompasses everything from basic economic systems to the study of institutions.

Microeconomics focuses on the granular mechanics of the market, analyzing consumer and producer behavior, supply and demand, and the equilibrium of competitive and noncompetitive markets. It explores how budget constraints interact with indifference curves and how opportunity costs drive individual economic decisions. Researchers also use these tools to evaluate market efficiency and the impact of various policy issues.

Macroeconomics takes a wider lens, looking at the determination of national output, employment, inflation, and interest rates. It investigates the impact of monetary and fiscal policies, as well as the complexities of international trade. Modern economic study has further expanded to include behavioral economics, which provides insights into real-world decision-making, and political economy, which examines the intersection of global trade, finance, and inequality. This broader scope includes studying labor markets and the measurement of GDP and unemployment.

The discipline is also a historical narrative. It tracks the evolution of economic thought from classical figures like Adam Smith to the influential theories of Keynes and the rise of Monetarism. Today, these foundational theories are applied to urgent contemporary crises, including climate change, the cost-of-living crisis, and the emergence of digital economies. These frameworks are increasingly used to address modern challenges like income inequality and sustainability.
