In short: We often look outward to understand the world, but the most complex, multi-layered mystery is the human mind. Psychology attempts to decode why we think, feel, and behave the way we do, using diverse scientific lenses to explore everything from cellular neurophysiology to the mechanics of social obedience.

Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior, a field that has evolved from early philosophical inquiries into a complex academic discipline. It seeks to answer fundamental questions about our existence: how we learn languages, why we forget, how memories are formed, and the biological basis of our most basic drives, such as hunger, sleep, and sex. The field is not a single monolithic theory but a collection of distinct approaches. Beyond individual cognition, the discipline also investigates the formation of romantic relationships and the evolutionary drivers behind partner selection. It even addresses the fundamental question of whether a clear separation exists between the physical brain and the intangible mind.

These approaches include biological, psychdynamic, cognitive, behavioural, and social theories. For instance, the biological approach examines neurophysiology at the cellular level and the physical structures of the brain, while the psychodynamic perspective explores the legacy of thinkers like Freud. The behavioural approach, notably through Skinner’s theories of reward and punishment, investigates how we learn to behave through classical conditioning. Meanwhile, social psychology investigates the mechanics of conformity, compliance, and obedience. The field also examines the nuances of internalisation and identification within social structures. Researchers also look at how memory functions for future events and the impact of brain damage or tumours on our cognitive stability.

The scope of the discipline even extends to the study of personality, moving from ancient ideas like the four humours to modern frameworks like the 'Big Five' traits. Ultimately, the field aims to uncover the secrets of human functions and the complexities of our social connections. This scientific inquiry is often described as the most significant challenge humans face. As noted by Boring in 1950, the human species represents the most profound puzzle we must solve.
