Is your diet soda a possible carcinogen?

Is Aspartame Bad for You? · 11:02 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: Aspartame is a staple in sugar-free snacks and sodas, yet it remains a lightning rod for controversy. While some claim it triggers seizures or tumors, global health bodies have reached a complex verdict: it is safe within certain limits, but its potential link to cancer warrants closer investigation.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sugar, meaning it can provide a sweet taste with virtually zero calories. Because it does not impact blood sugar, it is often used by people with diabetes or those on sugar-restricting diets like keto. However, it is not suitable for individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare inherited condition, because aspartame contains phenylalanine, which they cannot metabolize.

The safety of aspartame is a subject of ongoing scientific debate. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently classified the sweetener as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This classification was based on limited evidence regarding its link to hepatocellular carcinoma, a type of liver cancer, as well as limited evidence in animal studies and regarding its biological mechanisms.

Despite this classification, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) have not changed the established acceptable daily intake (ADI). JECFA reaffirmed that it is safe to consume up to 40 mg/kg of body weight per day. While one large study followed 100,000 people for eight years and found that high consumers were about 15% more likely to develop cancer, researchers emphasize that this does not prove aspartame directly causes cancer.

Ultimately, while sweeteners can help reduce sugar intake and tooth decay, they are not a magic bullet for health. The scientific community continues to investigate these potential effects to better understand the long-term impact of non-nutritive sweeteners on human health.
