Does science reach the limits of what reality actually contains?

Is Reality Limited to What Science Can Uncover? - Professor Alister McGrath · 53:38 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: If science can explain how the universe functions, can it ever explain why it exists or how we should live? Some thinkers argue that science is merely a signpost, pointing toward profound truths regarding morality and meaning that its methods are fundamentally unable to uncover.

The debate often centers on whether science is a complete description of reality or merely a tool for interpreting natural phenomena. This perspective is frequently framed through 'natural theology'—the idea that nature serves as a witness to the existence and character of God. A prominent voice in this critique of naturalism was C.S. Lewis (1898–1963), who explored these boundaries in works like Miracles and The Chronicles of Narnia.

A major point of contention is the capacity of science to address moral values. While some naturalists argue that there is no objective moral difference between good and bad, others suggest this is a hopeless overstatement. The core issue is not whether moral distinctions are trivial, but whether science possesses the capacity to articulate them. For many, science is limited to describing how things work, leaving questions of purpose and ethics to other domains.

This limitation is shared by some of the most significant scientific minds. Nobel Prize winner Peter Medawar, recognized for his work in immunology, maintained that certain questions regarding the meaning of life and moral values are beyond the reach of scientific inquiry. He argued that no conceivable advancement in scientific method would empower the field to answer them. Albert Einstein also famously addressed these boundaries during a landmark lecture at Princeton in 1939, suggesting that the scope of scientific discovery may never encompass the full depth of human reality.
