In short: Ji Kang was a central figure in the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, a group of iconoclasts who rejected social norms. A poet, alchemist, and musician, he lived by Daoist principles that prioritized nature over rigid institutions. His defiance of political power eventually led to his dramatic, legendary end.

Born in 224 in the Qiao state, Ji Kang was a man of high social standing who married into the imperial family and held official positions. Despite these advantages, he found government work tedious and preferred the company of his fellow sages in a secluded bamboo grove. Together, they engaged in activities that shocked the elite of the time, such as drinking, dancing, and playing the lute. Ji Kang’s philosophy was deeply rooted in Daoism, advocating for the removal of artificial distinctions like wealth, power, and moral judgment in favor of a life aligned with the natural order.

His rejection of Confucian values went beyond mere lifestyle choices. He famously engaged in manual labor as a metalworker and pursued alchemical studies, both of which were considered beneath his station. His writings, including essays on music theory and the nature of individuality, further challenged the status quo. His downfall began when he insulted Zhong Hui, an envoy of the powerful regent Sima Zhao. When a friend was later imprisoned, Ji Kang’s attempt to defend him resulted in his own incarceration and a death sentence orchestrated by his political rivals.

The final moments of his life have become a defining part of his legacy. Despite a petition for his pardon signed by 3,000 scholars, his enemies remained unmoved. As he prepared to face his execution in 263 in Luoyang, he reportedly remained entirely composed, choosing to spend his final minutes playing a piece on his guqin. This performance, often associated with the composition Guangling San, is remembered as a swan song that vanished with him. Beyond his historical impact, some traditions even suggest he achieved the status of a Daoist immortal through his death.
