How a former ship's steward became the United Kingdom's longest-serving deputy prime minister
In short: John Prescott rose from a working-class background as a merchant seaman to become the indispensable partner of Tony Blair. Serving as deputy prime minister for a decade, he acted as a vital bridge between Labour's traditional roots and its modernizing leadership, while brokering peace within the party's highest ranks.
Born in 1938, John Prescott’s trajectory was far from conventional. After leaving school at 15, he spent years as a steward on Cunard Line ships, an experience that grounded his later political career in the trade union movement. His transition to formal politics began in earnest with his 1968 economics degree from the University of Hull, followed by his election to Parliament for Hull East in 1970. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, he navigated the internal shifts of the Labour Party, evolving from a left-wing figure into a pragmatic force capable of swaying party conferences.
Prescott’s defining era arrived in 1994 when he was elected deputy leader of the Labour Party. When Tony Blair led the party to power in 1997, Prescott was appointed deputy prime minister. He headed a massive 'super ministry' covering environment, transport, and the regions, where he played a key role in brokering the Kyoto Protocol. Beyond his policy achievements, his most critical function was acting as a mediator between Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown. As their relationship grew increasingly contentious, Prescott’s ability to broker truces became essential to the stability of the administration.
Despite his influence, Prescott’s tenure was not without controversy. He faced public scrutiny for a 2001 brawl with a protester and a 2006 scandal involving an extramarital affair. These events, coupled with cabinet reshuffles, diminished his profile toward the end of his term. Nevertheless, when he left office alongside Blair in 2007, he held the record as the United Kingdom’s longest-serving deputy prime minister. He was later made a life peer in 2010, continuing his public life until his death in 2024, leaving behind a legacy as a unique, robust link between Labour’s working-class history and its modern governance.
