Is the coiled serpent of Kundalini a dormant power or a spiritual blockage?
In short: Kundalini is often described as a latent feminine energy coiled at the base of the spine, waiting to be awakened to achieve liberation. Yet, interpretations vary wildly: some see it as a rising cosmic force, while others view it as a physical obstruction that must be cleared for spiritual growth.
Rooted in Hindu Tantra and Shaktism, Kundalini is traditionally understood as a divine feminine power, or Shakti, residing in the subtle body. Often visualized as a serpent coiled three and a half times at the base of the spine, this energy is believed to be the source of both mundane pleasure and ultimate spiritual liberation, or moksha. When awakened through practices like meditation, breath control, or shaktipat—a transmission from a teacher—it is said to ascend through the central channel of the spine, piercing various energy centers known as chakras to transform consciousness.
The mechanism of this awakening is a subject of intense debate. Traditional perspectives, such as those found in the 16th-century Yoga Upanishads, describe a literal upward movement of energy toward the crown of the head. However, alternative views exist; for instance, Krishnamacharya, the father of modern yoga, famously argued that Kundalini is not an energy that rises, but rather a blockage preventing breath from entering the central channel. This diversity of thought reflects the complex evolution of the concept from its early mentions in the 9th-century BCE Upanishads to its 20th-century integration into Western psychology.
Western interest was significantly catalyzed by Sir John Woodroffe, whose 1919 work 'The Serpent Power' translated key Tantric texts for a global audience. Later, Carl Jung’s 1932 seminar on Kundalini yoga treated the concept as a symbolic map for the psychological process of individuation. Whether viewed as an objective cosmic force or a metaphor for internal development, Kundalini remains a central pillar in the study of consciousness. Practitioners often emphasize that such powerful experiences require careful preparation and the guidance of a master to avoid the dangers of premature or indiscriminate awakening.
