The Tang Dynasty scholar who dreamed of a lifetime while his millet cooked.
In short: Lü Dongbin is a legendary Daoist immortal whose life supposedly spanned two centuries. Before his ascension, he was a failed scholar who, according to folklore, experienced an entire lifetime of success and ruin in the time it took to cook a pot of millet, forever changing his perspective on glory.
Born around 796 CE in Jingzhao Prefecture, Lü Dongbin was a highly intelligent scholar during the Tang dynasty. Despite his academic prowess, he twice failed the top-level civil service examinations. His transition from a frustrated official to a spiritual master began in a Chang'an wine shop, where he encountered Zhongli Quan. This meeting led to the famous 'Dream of the Yellow Millet,' a transformative experience where Lü lived through eighteen years of political triumph and eventual disgrace in a dream that lasted only as long as his cooking grain. This vision convinced him of the transience of worldly success, prompting him to abandon his official life for the mountains.
To prove his readiness for immortality, Lü underwent ten rigorous trials set by his mentor, Zhongli Quan. These tests challenged his detachment from material wealth, his fear of death, and his ability to resist sexual temptation. Having passed these, he became a central figure in the Quanzhen School and a pioneer of neidan, or internal alchemy. His legacy is vast, ranging from his status as one of the Eight Immortals to his reputation as a prolific poet whose works appear in the Complete Tang poetry. He is often depicted as a scholar wielding a sword to dispel evil.
Lü’s character is famously complex, blending divine wisdom with human eccentricities. Legends portray him as a lover of wine and a figure prone to bouts of temper, reflecting the colorful nature of Daoist immortals. His interactions with others, such as the courtesan White Peony, vary wildly across different literary traditions—ranging from tales of sexual alchemy to stories of moral redemption. Whether viewed as a historical figure mentioned in the History of Song or a mythological entity, Lü Dongbin remains a foundational figure in Chinese culture, embodying the pursuit of inner peace and the rejection of transient worldly status.
