How impulse responses and convolution define system behavior
In short: This MIT OpenCourseWare lecture explores how complex differential equations are solved by understanding how a system reacts to a single, sudden force known as an impulse.
Instructors Gilbert Strang and Cleve Moler examine the relationship between input forces and system outputs. The video explains that when a system is subjected to an impulse, the resulting output is termed the impulse response. Crucially, for any arbitrary input, the system's total response can be understood as a convolution between that input and the impulse response.
