How a quiet California orchard town became a cradle for global tech giants
In short: Los Altos began as an agricultural retreat with apricot orchards and summer cottages. Yet, this unassuming bedroom community evolved into a pivotal Silicon Valley hub. From the garage where the first Apple computers were built to the house where Facebook scaled, Los Altos has quietly shaped the modern digital landscape.
The origins of Los Altos trace back to 1906, when Paul Shoup of the Southern Pacific Railroad formed the Altos Land Company to develop a commuter town linking Palo Alto and Los Gatos. By 1908, steam trains were running through the area, and by 1952, residents incorporated as a city to protect their local zoning from neighboring annexation. Despite its rapid growth between 1950 and 1980, the city has maintained a semi-rural aesthetic, characterized by broad dirt shoulders, limited street lighting, and a downtown triangle designed to bypass through traffic.
This quiet environment proved fertile for technological innovation. In 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak assembled the first 50 Apple I computers in a Los Altos garage. Decades later, in 2004, Mark Zuckerberg rented a home in the city—dubbed 'Casa Facebook'—where he and his associates grew the platform from 200,000 to 2.5 million members. The city’s influence continues to evolve; in 2021, it became the site of the world’s first consumer flying car showroom, signaling a shift from the garage-based computing of the 1970s to the futuristic transportation of the present.
Beyond its tech legacy, Los Altos manages a complex geography. The city is crossed by three creeks originating on Black Mountain and remains subject to seismic activity, having experienced the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes. Today, it ranks among the wealthiest cities in the United States, with median household incomes exceeding $250,000 as of 2023. While it faces ongoing political debates regarding downtown revitalization and competition from nearby commercial centers, the city remains a high-value enclave, defined by its blend of historical preservation and its role as a quiet engine of global industry.
