In short: L.S. Lowry’s painting Going to Work is now on permanent display at IWM North. Commissioned during the Second World War to capture the industrial backbone of the British war effort, this iconic work is finally accessible to the public after spending much of its existence hidden away.

Commissioned in 1943 by the War Artists Advisory Commission, the painting was intended to document the vital role of industry during the conflict. Despite its significance, the piece has rarely been seen, having spent the vast majority of its life in storage.

Its arrival at IWM North marks the first time the work has returned to its home in Manchester for permanent exhibition, offering a rare glimpse into Lowry's perspective on the wartime industrial landscape.
