Lyudmila Ulitskaya: The Russian novelist who finds wonder in the ordinary and the extraordinary.
In short: Born in 1943, Lyudmila Ulitskaya began her literary career in her late forties. A former geneticist fired for distributing samizdat, she has become one of Russia's most acclaimed writers. Her work, characterized by a laconic style and wondrous optimism, avoids overt politics while navigating the complex realities of modern existence.
Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s path to literature was unconventional. After earning a degree in genetics from Moscow State University, she worked at the Institute of General Genetics until 1970, when she was dismissed for handling samizdat literature. She spent nearly a decade away from formal employment before finding her way into the arts, eventually serving as a literary consultant and repertory director at a Jewish drama theatre in Moscow. Her fiction only began to appear in print in 1990, with her debut novel, Sonechka, arriving in 1993 when she was fifty years old.
Despite her late start, Ulitskaya has produced a prolific body of work, including over ten novels and ten short story collections. Her writing is noted for its unique observational quality; she maintains an equal distance from her characters, favoring concise descriptions over the intense psychological probing often associated with the Russian literary tradition. Critics and readers alike, such as Masha Gessen, have highlighted the addictive nature of her prose, which is driven by a profound curiosity about the twists and coincidences of life. She views contemporary writers as beneficiaries of the great Russian literary giants, whose teachings have provided a necessary shield against propaganda.
Ulitskaya’s life has been defined by both her artistic success and her principled stance against the Russian regime. A vocal critic of Vladimir Putin, she has consistently defended those persecuted by the state, including corresponding with the incarcerated Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Following her public denunciation of the war on Ukraine in 2022, she relocated to Berlin. Her work continues to explore themes of religious tolerance, the role of the intelligentsia, and the complexities of everyday life, earning her numerous international honors, including the French Légion d’honneur and the Austrian State Prize for European Literature.
