How a crowdsourced map is holding China's factories accountable

Ma Jun: An interactive map to track (and end) pollution in China · 11:11 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: Transparency can be a powerful tool for environmental reform. Ma Jun explains how his interactive platform, the Blue Map, empowers citizens to report pollution and forces industrial accountability through real-time data.

The Blue Map serves as a digital watchdog, allowing people to report local pollution violations and monitor environmental data in real time. By making this information public, the platform helps companies across global supply chains make more informed sourcing decisions based on a factory's actual environmental record.

This initiative has already motivated more than 14,000 factories to improve their practices. It provides a mechanism for citizens to help China reach its pledge of becoming carbon neutral by 2060 by holding specific emitters accountable for their impact.
