Why moving electric charges create the invisible forces that guide us
In short: Every magnet has two poles: north and south. While opposites attract and like poles repel, the true magic lies in the motion. From electrons spinning in atomic orbitals to massive currents in conductors, magnetism is the silent consequence of electric charges in constant motion.
At its core, magnetism is a phenomenon driven by the movement of electric charges. This motion can manifest as an electric current flowing through a conductor, charged particles traveling through space, or even the internal motion of an electron within an atomic orbital. This movement generates a magnetic field, a region of influence often symbolized by the letter B and measured in units called tesla (T). While the gauss was once common, it is no longer the standard unit; notably, one gauss is equal to 10⁻⁴ tesla.
The behavior of these fields is governed by unique physical laws. For instance, a magnetic field exerts a force on moving charges that acts at right angles to both the velocity of the charge and the field itself. This specific interaction deflects the particle's path without actually changing its speed. This principle is what allows a magnetized iron needle in a compass to experience torque, aligning itself with the Earth's magnetic field to point us toward the north.
One of the most striking differences between electricity and magnetism lies in the structure of their fields. Electric field lines can start and end on a charge, but magnetic field lines are continuous loops that always close on themselves. Mathematically, this means the flux through any closed surface vanishes, expressed as div B = 0. Despite extensive searches, scientists have never found a magnetic monopole, meaning we have yet to find a single, isolated magnetic charge.
