In short: Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī was more than the Buddha's aunt and adoptive mother. She was a trailblazer who led five hundred women on a grueling journey to demand equal spiritual standing. Her persistence reshaped Buddhist history, securing her place as the first woman to receive ordination into the monastic order.

Born in Devdaha as the sister of the Buddha's biological mother, Māyā, Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī became a central figure in the Buddha's early life. Following her sister's death just seven days after the Buddha's birth, she took on the role of his primary caregiver. She raised him alongside her own children, Nanda and Sundari Nanda, within the Śākya royal family.

Her path to monastic life was not easily granted. After the death of her husband, King Suddhodhana, she sought ordination from the Buddha. When he initially refused her request three times, she did not retreat. Instead, she and five hundred followers—comprising princesses from the Sakyan and Koliyan kingdoms—shaved their heads and traveled on foot to Vesāli to confront him again. Her determination eventually moved the Buddha's attendant, Ananda, to intercede on her behalf.

The Buddha eventually permitted her entry into the Sangha, provided she accepted the Eight Garudhammas, a set of rigorous conditions. By agreeing to these, she became the first bhikkhuni. Her legacy is celebrated in the Pali Canon and other traditions, where she is honored with the title Buddhamātā, or Mother of the Buddha. In the Lotus Sutra, her spiritual future is even prophesied to culminate in her own eventual buddhahood.

Beyond her historical role, Buddhist texts frame her life as a culmination of countless past meritorious acts. Stories from the Therī-apadāna describe her long journey through previous incarnations, where she consistently supported paccekabuddhas with offerings and service. For Gotamī, the title of Mother of the Buddha was the ultimate achievement, representing the fulfillment of a spiritual aspiration that she had cultivated over many lifetimes.
