How a Physics Graduate Became the World's Most Famous Guru to the Beatles
In short: Mahesh Prasad Varma, a physics graduate turned ascetic, transformed Transcendental Meditation into a global phenomenon. From humble beginnings as a disciple in the Himalayas to advising the Beatles and building a multi-billion dollar organization, his journey remains one of the most intriguing cultural shifts of the twentieth century.
Born into a Kayastha family in British India, Mahesh Prasad Varma earned a physics degree from Allahabad University in 1942. His life took a spiritual turn when he became the dedicated secretary and pupil of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math. After his master's death in 1953, he spent two years in reclusion before emerging in 1955 to teach a meditation technique he claimed was traditional. By 1958, he had launched a global mission, eventually adopting the name Maharishi, meaning great seer.
The Maharishi’s influence exploded in the late 1960s when he became the spiritual advisor to the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and other celebrities. His movement, which emphasized a simple technique accessible to everyone, faced intense criticism from traditional Indian sages who argued he stripped away the necessary elements of penance and asceticism. Despite this, he successfully trained over 40,000 teachers and taught millions, establishing a vast network of schools, universities, and businesses ranging from organic farms to health clinics.
His organization’s rapid growth was marked by both ambition and controversy. In 1977, a U.S. court ruled that Transcendental Meditation was religious, effectively barring its use in public schools. Later, in 1988, he faced accusations of tax fraud in India, prompting his move to the Netherlands. Even as he retreated into silence in 2008, his legacy persisted through his Global Country of World Peace and the millions who adopted his practices, leaving behind a complex history that straddles the line between spiritual movement and multinational corporation.
