How do we measure the spread of a data set?
In short: Understanding data requires more than just finding an average; you need to know how much the numbers vary. This video teaches you how to calculate Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) to quantify that spread.
Mean Absolute Deviation, or MAD, is a statistical tool used to determine how "spread out" a specific set of data points is from the mean. While basic arithmetic tells us where the center of a group lies, MAD provides a sense of consistency or volatility within that group.
The lesson is designed for 6th-grade students as part of a curriculum that introduces learners to deriving meaning from data. It builds on foundational skills like decimals and fractions to help students move toward more sophisticated algebraic thinking.
