How the Eames duo imagined a digital future for The Met
In 1975, design legends Charles and Ray Eames proposed a radical reimagining of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This restored film explores their vision for a museum that uses technology to foster deeper connections between visitors and art.
Presented to Director Thomas Hoving, the Eames' two-part proposal moved beyond mere architecture. Their vision included a physical maquette of the galleries and a film exploring the museum's role in hosting guests and connecting the public to the collection.
The proposal featured an 'Information Hall' equipped with interactive computer terminals, allowing visitors to create personalized tours. It also envisioned a sophisticated timeline of art history to guide the museum experience. This footage was recently restored by the Library of Congress in 2025.
