The Lebanese philosopher who bridged Eastern mysticism and the American literary scene
In short: Mikhail Naimy was a titan of 20th-century spiritual writing and a central figure in the rebirth of Arabic literature. From his early days in Washington state to his leadership in the New York Pen League, Naimy crafted a legacy that transcended borders, languages, and the conventional boundaries of modern philosophy.
Born in 1889 into a Greek Orthodox family in Baskinta, Lebanon, Mikhail Naimy’s life was defined by a restless intellectual journey. His education spanned continents, taking him from the Russian Teachers' Institute in Nazareth and a theological seminary in Poltava to the University of Washington in Seattle. By 1911, he had settled in the United States, where he balanced his life as a student of law and liberal arts with the practical demands of working in his brothers' furniture store in Walla Walla.
Naimy’s influence on literature was cemented in New York City, where he became the secretary of the New York Pen League. Alongside Kahlil Gibran and other prominent Mahjari writers, he spearheaded a movement dedicated to the revitalization of Arabic letters. His prolific output included poetry written in Russian, Arabic, and English, as well as profound philosophical works. Among these, The Book of Mirdad remains his most celebrated contribution, described by the mystic Osho as standing far above any other book in existence.
After two decades in the United States, Naimy returned to his native Lebanon in 1932. He spent the remainder of his long life in Baskinta, continuing to write until his death in 1988 at the age of 98. His work, which often explored themes of theosophy and meditative vision, continues to be studied for its unique synthesis of Eastern spiritual motifs and Western literary forms. Today, he is remembered not only as a poet and novelist but as a bridge between disparate cultural and philosophical worlds.
