How a Parisian artist became the spiritual architect of an experimental global city.
In short: Born into a bourgeois Jewish family in 1878, Mirra Alfassa evolved from an impressionist painter into a revered spiritual leader. Known as The Mother, she co-founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in India and later established Auroville, a unique township designed to transcend national boundaries and foster human unity.
Mirra Alfassa’s journey began in Paris, where she studied art at the Académie Julian and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. Despite an early atheistic outlook, she experienced profound visions that drew her toward occultism and eventually to Pondicherry, India. There, she met Sri Aurobindo, whom she recognized as the figure from her childhood dreams. Their partnership led to the development of Integral Yoga, a philosophy that encourages practicing spirituality within the context of daily life rather than through monastic withdrawal.
Following Sri Aurobindo’s death in 1950, Alfassa assumed full leadership of the ashram, which had grown from a small commune into a significant spiritual center. She navigated complex political landscapes, including the transition of Pondicherry from French control to an Indian union territory in 1954. Her influence extended to prominent figures like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who sought her counsel. During this period, she shifted her focus toward internal yogic practice, eventually withdrawing from public activities to dedicate herself to her work.
Alfassa’s most ambitious project was the creation of Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968. Inspired by her vision of a place belonging to all humanity, the city was intended to serve as a model for universal unity. Although she passed away in 1973 at the age of 95, her legacy persists through the ongoing growth of Auroville and the extensive documentation of her teachings, most notably the 13-volume collection titled Mother's Agenda, recorded by her disciple Satprem.
