The parts of our world that don't officially exist

Tawanda Kanhema: My journey mapping the uncharted world · 8:14 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: Large portions of the globe are missing from major mapping platforms, creating a digital void that leaves communities without essential services. Photographer Tawanda Kanhema shares his journey to bridge this gap by mapping thousands of miles of uncharted territory.

When areas are omitted from widely used platforms like Google Street View, it isn't just a technical oversight; it results in the neglect of communities regarding humanitarian aid and vital services. Kanhema traveled 3,000 miles across Zimbabwe, Namibia, and northern Canada to document these invisible regions.

The project highlights how mapping is a tool for connectivity. By documenting these uncharted spaces, the work aims to build a more inclusive world where every community can be seen and supported by global infrastructure.
