How natural processes can create the world's most complex living organisms
In short: In an era when most believed complexity required a divine designer, a revolutionary theory emerged. Natural selection explains how life transforms through a simple, relentless cycle of variation, competition, and survival, allowing species to diverge and adapt to an ever-changing world through entirely natural mechanisms.
Natural selection is a primary mechanism of evolution that drives species to change and diverge over time. The process relies on four essential factors: the potential for a species to increase in number, genetic variation within individuals—driven by mutation and sexual reproduction—competition for limited environmental resources, and the subsequent proliferation of organisms better suited to their surroundings. When an organism possesses a beneficial trait, such as the long neck that allows giraffes to reach high leaves, it gains a competitive advantage that increases its likelihood of survival and reproduction. For instance, giraffes evolved long necks to access food sources that remain out of reach for others. This specific adaptation provides a distinct advantage for survival.
This mechanism is defined by differential reproduction. It occurs when certain hereditary variants increase an organism's chances of survival or fertility compared to others. While often associated with competition for resources, selection can also be driven by physical environmental factors, such as inclement weather. Crucially, selection can happen even if every member of a population dies at the same age, provided some individuals leave more offspring than others.
In 1858, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) and Charles Darwin (1809–1882) released this theory together. While Darwin's 1859 work, On the Origin of Species, eventually led him to overshadow Wallace's contributions, both men arrived at very similar conclusions. Their work challenged the prevailing belief of the 19th century that complex organisms must have been designed by a transcendent God, proving instead that complexity can arise through totally natural processes.
