The iridescent, crow-like shimmer of a 130-million-year-old predator

New Dinosaur Research: Microraptor's Feather Color Revealed · 3:29 · Video: American Museum of Natural History · Watch at the source

In short: Forget the drab, dusty dinosaurs of the past. New analysis of Microraptor fossils reveals a pigeon-sized predator coated in glossy, blue-black feathers. This discovery suggests that before feathers were even used for flight, they were likely used for something much more theatrical: social display.

By using scanning electron microscopy to examine melanosomes—tiny, pigment-containing organelles—a team of American and Chinese researchers has reconstructed the plumage of Microraptor. The findings, published in the journal Science, show that these non-avian dinosaurs possessed an iridescent sheen with hues of black and blue, strikingly similar to the feathers of a modern crow. This represents the earliest known record of iridescent feather color.

The research also redefines our understanding of Microrambor's anatomy. While scientists previously believed the dinosaur possessed a broad, teardrop-shaped tail fan designed for aerodynamic stability, new evidence shows the tail was much narrower. Instead, it featured two protruding, elongate feathers. Because these feathers would have likely impaired rather than aided flight, researchers like Julia Clarke suggest they evolved for courtship and social signaling.

This shift in perspective highlights a broader evolutionary pattern: feathers likely originated for insulation or display before being co-opted for locomotion. Furthermore, the discovery of a new species, Jian changmaensis, in the Changma Basin of northwestern China, provides a vital link in this transition. This species, which lived approximately 120 million years ago, lived in an ecosystem where it may have hunted birds, potentially acting as the predator behind mysterious clusters of bird bones found at the site.
