Noomi Rapace invented her surname, choosing a word meaning bird of prey
When Noomi Norén married actor Ola Norell in 2001, their surnames sounded so alike that neither wanted to take the other's. They made up a new one, Rapace, bird of prey in French and Italian, because it sounded cool. Eight years later she carried it to fame as Lisbeth Salander.
Rapace was born in Hudiksvall, Sweden, on 28 December 1979, to a Swedish actress and a Spanish flamenco singer from Badajoz whom she barely knew; she first saw him, on stage, at 15. At five she moved with her mother and stepfather to a farm at Flúðir in Iceland, and at seven she appeared without lines in In the Shadow of the Raven, an Icelandic production, the experience that made her want to act. She has described herself as coming from a poor farm, with no money or connections to open doors. She left home at 15 for theatre school in Stockholm.
Television came first, a role in the soap Tre kronor in 1996, followed by acting school at Skara and years on Stockholm stages including the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Her breakthrough on screen was Daisy Diamond in 2007, a Danish film in which she played a troubled teenage mother and won both of Denmark's top acting prizes.
Then came Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2009. As the hacker Lisbeth Salander she won Sweden's Guldbagge award for best actress and a BAFTA nomination, and the three Swedish films together took more than 200 million dollars worldwide. Her first English-language part followed in Guy Ritchie's second Sherlock Holmes film. Ridley Scott, who met her after the trilogy and urged her to polish her accent, cast her as the scientist Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus in 2012.
Since then she has alternated Hollywood work with stranger projects. In What Happened to Monday she played seven sisters, and in the Icelandic folk horror Lamb, which premiered at Cannes in 2021, her performance won best actress at the Sitges festival. She sat on the Cannes jury in 2022 and played Mother Teresa in Mother in 2025. Fluent in Swedish, Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian and English, she calls London her favourite city.
