The world's most synchronized migration is a biological masterpiece

In short: Imagine thousands of individuals, usually solitary wanderers of the open ocean, suddenly converging on a single beach to act as one. The arribada describes a coordinated, large-scale nesting phenomenon involving olive ridley sea turtles, showcasing a remarkable biological occurrence.

The olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) is one of the smallest and most abundant sea turtle species globally. While they are primarily pelagic—often observed by ships over 2,400 miles from shore—they exhibit a unique dual life. They spend much of their lives as solitary omnivores, migrating thousands of miles to feed on jellyfish, crustaceans, and algae, often diving to depths of 500 feet to forage on the ocean floor.

The most striking aspect of their biology is the arribada, a phenomenon found only in the genus Lepidochelys. During these events, thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of females return to the specific beaches where they hatched. They use the wind and tides to lumber ashore in a synchronized swarm to lay their eggs. While solitary nesting is common across 40 countries, these mass arrivals occur on only a few specific beaches worldwide, such as those in Mexico, Costa Rica, and India.

Despite their abundance, olive ridleys are in significant trouble. Historical estimates suggest up to 10 million once roamed the Pacific, but global populations have seen a 30 to 36 percent reduction over the last century. In some regions, like Suriname, certain arribada populations have plummeted by over 90 percent since 1967. They face severe threats from bycatch in fishing gear, direct harvesting of eggs and meat, and heavy predation on hatchlings by crabs, birds, and snakes.
