How a single drug reshaped the borders of global trade
In short: In the mid-19th century, the British Empire waged two wars against China to secure market access. At the heart of this conflict was opium—a commodity grown in British India that forced a collision between imperial interests and Chinese sovereignty.
The Opium Wars were a series of armed conflicts during the mid-1800s that fundamentally altered the balance of power in East Asia. The first Opium War took place between 1839 and 1842, primarily pitting China against Great Britain. The second conflict, spanning from 1856 to 1860, saw both Britain and France join forces against China. These wars were driven by the British desire for better access to Chinese markets, specifically to facilitate the sale of opium produced in British India.
To understand the stakes, one must look at the Qing dynasty, which ruled China from 1644 to 1911/12. The Manchus established this dynasty after seizing Beijing from rebel forces. Under their rule, the empire's territory tripled compared to the preceding Ming dynasty, and the population surged from 150 million to 450 million. This period was marked by significant economic integration and cultural expansion, including the Sinicization of various minorities and a flourishing of industries like porcelain manufacture.
The Qing military structure was complex, utilizing the Lüying (Army of the Green Standard) for local defense while keeping regular Manchu Banner troops in strategic hubs. However, as Western powers pushed for trade concessions through the use of opium, these established imperial structures faced unprecedented external pressure. The resulting conflicts were not merely about a single substance but represented a broader struggle over global commerce and the opening of China's borders to Western influence.
