Palo is an Afro-Cuban religion centered on the nganga, a vessel for the dead.
In short: Developed in Cuba from Central African Kongo traditions, Palo is an initiatory religion where practitioners, known as paleros or paleras, command spirits of the deceased. These spirits inhabit a physical vessel called the nganga, which serves as a powerful, often intimidating agent that can be used for both healing and harm.
Palo emerged in Cuba between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, drawing from the traditional religions of enslaved Bakongo people. It incorporates elements of Catholicism and Spiritism, reflecting the complex cultural landscape of the Atlantic slave trade era. Unlike religions that focus on a remote creator divinity, such as the Palo deity Nsambi, this tradition directs its primary attention toward the spirits of the dead, known as nfumbe.
The nganga is the religion's central feature, functioning as a material manifestation of ancestral or nature deities called mpungu. Typically an iron cauldron, the nganga is filled with a variety of objects, including sticks, soil, and human remains. These vessels are considered living agents that demand constant care, including offerings of animal blood, rum, and cigar smoke. Practitioners often describe their relationship with the nganga as a lifelong struggle of wills, where the vessel is viewed as a god in its own right.
Palo is organized into autonomous groups called munanso congo, led by a tata or yayi, and divided into denominations known as ramas, such as Mayombe and Briyumba. Because there is no central authority or sacred text, practices vary significantly. While some practitioners also engage in Santería or Catholicism, Palo is often perceived as wilder and more unpredictable. Its practitioners have historically faced marginalization and accusations of witchcraft, a label many have reclaimed as a source of identity and pride.
