Who was Pasithea, the elusive Grace promised as a prize to the god of sleep?
In short: In Greek mythology, Pasithea appears as a shadowy figure, most famous as the wife of Hypnos, the god of sleep. Though she is a Grace, her origins remain a puzzle, with ancient poets offering conflicting accounts of her parentage and role in the lives of the Olympian gods.
Pasithea is one of the Graces, yet her identity is remarkably fluid across ancient texts. In Homer's Iliad, she is a younger Grace whom Hera promises to Hypnos as a reward for helping him lull Zeus to sleep during the Trojan War. This divine bribe establishes her primary mythological association as the consort of the god of sleep, a role echoed by later Roman poets like Catullus and Statius.
The mystery of her origins is compounded by the epic Dionysiaca by Nonnus, written in the fifth century CE. Nonnus presents contradictory accounts, at times naming Dionysus and Hera as her parents, despite their status as bitter rivals. Other traditions are equally fragmented; a summary of a lost poem by Sostratus places her in a beauty contest judged by Tiresias, while some scholars have even debated whether certain artistic depictions of a 'Pasithea' actually represent a Nereid of the same name.
Visual evidence is similarly ambiguous. While a red-figure lekythos in Geneva bears an inscription naming her, the attributes—a mirror and alabastra—could just as easily belong to a Nereid or a hetaira. Other potential depictions, such as a bell krater from 400-380 BCE or a fresco in Pompeii, remain speculative interpretations by modern scholars like Erika Simon. Ultimately, Pasithea remains a peripheral but persistent presence, a figure whose name and nature were never fully fixed by the ancient imagination.
