In short: Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow was more than a religious leader; he was the spiritual architect of Russia's liberation. By refusing to bow to Polish occupiers or accept a Catholic tsar, he ignited a nationwide resistance that ultimately ended the chaos of the early seventeenth century, paying with his life.

Born Yermolay before 1530, Hermogenes rose to prominence as the Metropolitan of Kazan, where he earned a reputation for his efforts in converting Muslim Volga Tatars to Eastern Orthodoxy. His ascent to the highest ecclesiastical office occurred in 1606, following the deposition of the false tsar, Dmitry I. Installed as Patriarch on 3 July 1606 at the Dormition Cathedral, he initially supported Tsar Vasily IV, even anathematizing the rebel forces of Ivan Bolotnikov to maintain order during a period of extreme instability.

The true test of his resolve arrived when Polish forces seized the Moscow Kremlin. Hermogenes became the primary obstacle to the Polish plan to install Wladyslaw IV on the Russian throne. He adamantly refused to endorse the coronation unless the candidate converted to Orthodoxy, standing firm even when faced with direct threats of violence from collaborating boyars. By December 1610, he began circulating letters to Russian towns, explicitly calling for a popular uprising against the foreign occupiers.

Despite being imprisoned in the Chudov Monastery for his defiance, Hermogenes continued to exert influence, blessing the volunteer army led by Kuzma Minin and Prince Pozharsky. His refusal to retract his support or anathematize the liberation forces led to his brutal treatment; he was starved and beaten to death on 17 February 1612. His legacy was cemented in 1913, when his relics were discovered during repairs at the monastery and he was canonized as a hieromartyr by the Russian Orthodox Church during the Romanov Dynasty Tercentenary celebrations.
