The paralyzed poet who married the future secret wife of King Louis XIV
In short: Paul Scarron was a celebrated French wit and novelist whose life was defined by extreme physical suffering and literary innovation. Despite being permanently disabled and confined to a wheelchair, he became a central figure in Parisian society, eventually marrying Françoise d'Aubigné, the woman who would later become Madame de Maintenon.
Born in Paris around 1610, Scarron’s life took a dramatic turn in 1638 when he became disabled. While historical accounts offer various colorful explanations—including a mishap involving a swamp or an ice-water bath—modern analysis suggests he likely suffered from polio. The condition left his upper body permanently twisted and his legs paralyzed, forcing him to rely on a wheelchair and significant doses of opium to manage his chronic pain.
Despite these hardships, Scarron remained a prolific and influential writer. He is best remembered for his Roman comique, a vivid, realistic depiction of a troupe of strolling actors that is considered one of the first true French novels. His work often drew inspiration from Spanish literature, particularly the picaresque style, and he was instrumental in popularizing comedies featuring servants who assume the roles of their masters. His influence extended far beyond his own era, providing inspiration for later writers like Théophile Gautier and potentially Molière.
Scarron’s life was also marked by political and social turbulence. He was a vocal critic of Cardinal Mazarin, a stance that cost him his royal pensions, and he lived as a libertine before his 1652 marriage to the impoverished Françoise d'Aubigné. When he died in Paris in 1660, he left behind a legacy as a master of burlesque and a pioneer of the French novel, having navigated a life of immense physical agony with sharp, enduring wit.
