How a Roman grocer's son became the most celebrated opera librettist in history
In short: Pietro Metastasio began as a child prodigy reciting verses on Roman streets. He rose to become the imperial poet of Vienna, crafting the definitive libretti for 18th-century opera. His work defined an era of musical drama, yet his legacy faded as the world moved toward the psychological depth of Mozart.
Born Pietro Trapassi in 1698, the young poet was discovered by the jurist Giovanni Vincenzo Gravina, who adopted him and renamed him Metastasio. Under Gravina’s tutelage, he was trained in law and Latin, though his true talent lay in improvisational poetry. Following his patron's death in 1718, Metastasio inherited a fortune, only to exhaust it within two years while living a fashionable life in Rome.
His career shifted when the prima donna Marianna Bulgarelli recognized his genius and encouraged him to abandon the law for musical drama. Under her patronage, he produced a string of successful operas, including Didone abbandonata and Artaserse. In 1729, he accepted a prestigious position as court poet in Vienna, where he spent the next four decades. During this time, he wrote with remarkable speed, sometimes completing libretti like Achille in Sciro in just eighteen days.
Metastasio’s work was perfectly calibrated for the vocal virtuosity of his age, particularly the castrati singers who dominated the stage. His style was lyrical, lucid, and designed for musical effect rather than pure literature. However, as musical tastes evolved toward the psychological focus of composers like Gluck and Mozart, his rigid structures fell out of favor. Despite this, his influence remained immense; by the time of his death in 1782, his works had been translated into multiple languages and set to music by nearly every major composer of his time.
