In short: Jorge Mario Bergoglio, known as Pope Francis, broke centuries of tradition as the first non-European pope since the 8th century. His papacy was defined by a commitment to humility, social justice, and inclusivity, marked by a departure from formal papal living and a focus on the world's most vulnerable populations.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1936 to Italian immigrant parents, Bergoglio’s path to the papacy was unconventional. After training as a chemical technician and working in a laboratory, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1958. His early life included a brush with death from pneumonia, which led to the excision of part of a lung. Ordained in 1969, he rose through the ranks of the Church in Argentina, eventually becoming the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and a cardinal in 2001.

As pope, Francis signaled a shift in tone and substance. He famously eschewed the Apostolic Palace for a simple guesthouse and rejected traditional ornate vestments. His governance prioritized climate change, the abolition of capital punishment, and a critique of consumerism. He also navigated complex diplomatic waters, including mediating between Cuba and the United States and negotiating with China regarding bishop appointments. His tenure was not without controversy, particularly regarding his actions during Argentina's Dirty War, though many associates and human rights figures have defended his record.

The culmination of his papacy was the Synod on Synodality, regarded as the most significant ecclesiastical event since the Second Vatican Council. Francis sought to modernize the Church's approach to inclusivity, permitting blessings for same-sex couples and integrating laypeople into the Roman Curia. Following a period of declining health, he made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday 2025 and passed away on 21 April 2025. His legacy remains a subject of intense study, reflecting a life that bridged the gap between traditional Catholic doctrine and the demands of a rapidly changing global society.
